lined in a silky brown fur and fur lined cheek pouches on the outside of their bodies. The color of the Pacific pocket mouse resembles their habitat as a light brown.The soles of their hind feet are hairy, which act as a distinguishing mark from other pocket mice, along with two patches of hair that are lighter on their ear. Pacific pocket mice range from 4.25 inches to 5.2 inches in length from the nose to the tip of the tail. The tail of the pocket mouse is about 2inches. The height of the pocket mouse is .625 inches. The pocket mice weigh usually from 0.25 oz. to 0.33 oz.

     The Pacific pocket mice occur on fine-grain, sandy or gravelly areas in the vicinity of the Pacific Ocean and haven't been found more than 2.5 miles away from the ocean. They have been known to be located in coastal southern California, from Marina del Rey and El Segundo in Los Angeles County, south to the vicinity of the Mexican border in San Diego County. The majority of records are within 1 mile of the coast, at less than 600 ft in elevation. Currently, populations are known at three locations: the Dana Point Headlands, San Mateo Creek, and near the Santa Margarita River in Camp Pendleton.

     The Pacific Pocket Mouse was said to have been extinct almost over 20 years ago but was then rediscovered in 1993. It was then listed as federally endangered in 1994. It was listed on September 28th 1998 where a recovery plan was set in place. Based on the number and small sizes of the three known populations, the sedentary nature of the Pacific pocket mouse the biggest threats are habitat destruction, fragmentation and degradation. All of these threats are because of different land development such as urban,agricultural, residential and recreational. Because of their very small population they are more supceptual to extinction because of these habitat threats. The loss of groundwater and or blow-sand necessary for habitat maintenance is significant to this species' survival. Because they are an invasive species, factors such as illegal trash dumping, domestic animal predators, road kill, and inadequate regulatory mechanisms affect the species' well being.

     Right Now it is estimated that only 150 Pacific pocket mice are left in existence. In a order to attempt to conserve the Pacific pocket mouse,  the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is focusing its efforts on stabilizing current populations, searching for new populations, and establishing additional populations by means of the release of captive-bred individuals. The ultimate goal is to protect the Pacific pocket mouse until it is no longer necessary. In the attempts to save the limited population the Dana Point City Council voted in support of a proposition that gave the pacific pocket mouse 700 acres of land which would be privately owned in order for the last of the subspecies to survive and reproduce without the disruption and threat to their habitat. In 2010 at Camp Pendleton detection dogs were able to locate Pacific Pocket Mouse and found a 2.5x 
increase in that habitat. The recovery plan states that its goal is to move the subspecies down to threatened by 2023. Although some progress has been seen, there is a lot progress to make and work to be done.

Pygmy Rabbits by Daniel Dempster

The pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) is the smallest species of rabbit in North America, found mostly in the northwestern states of the USA. Its geographic range is mostly contiguous through the state of California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming, but has a secluded permanent residence in eastern Washington. It is in this distinct population segment in the Columbia Basin where the species has been listed under the EPA as endangered. It was listed in November of 2001

The herbivorous pygmy rabbit tends to reside in shrubland areas, using dense stands of big sagebrush growing in loose soils. Sagebrush is used by these rabbits for food and shelter throughout the year. Pygmy rabbits are unusual from other rabbits in that they are one of only two species of rabbits in North America that burrow, which is why they look for loose soil. The burrows have multiple uses, creating shelter near food sources (sagebrush), thermal protection, and protection from predators. Predators of the pygmy rabbit include weasels, coyotes, owls, and many other carnivorous mammals and birds. While sagebrush remains the primary source of the pygmy rabbit’s food, especially in winter, grass and forbs provide for food in the spring as well.

The pygmy rabbit is a very localized and non-migrant species, which could probably be attributed to its lack of size and mobility. Another large contributing factor to their localization is that they like to stay close to their food sources, especially in winter when sagebrush is likely the only option for food. However, the home range estimates in the state of Washington, where the pygmy rabbit is listed, are considerably larger that estimates in other portions.

There have been observations of rapid local declines of populations in several states, especially in Washington. Annual mortality rates with adults in the population have been recorded as high as 88%, along with juvenile mortality rates being over 50% within 5 weeks of birth. This mortality rate is probably best explained by predation, yet starvation and environmental stress can also be serious factors. Pygmy rabbits were considered rare in the 20th century, and were thought to be extirpated from Washington until their rediscovery in 1979. With surveys conducted in 1987 and 1988, 5 subpopulations were found in Washington which were very small as four of the five had populations of under 100. Another subpopulation was found in 1997, but five of the total six were found to be extirpated in 2001. One of the extirpated spots experienced a fire, wiping out much of the necessities for the rabbits.
The likely primary threat to the pygmy rabbits is habitat loss and fragmentation. Nearly 60% of the original native shrub steppe habitats that house them have been lost to dryland and irrigated crop production, urban/rural development, and fires. While this is the probable primary threat, many other threats linger as the populations drop below a certain threshold. These secondary threats include disease, predation, loss of genetic diversity, and inbreed depression.

The recovery plan outlines specific short-term objectives (2012-2021) and and overall long term goal. In the short term, the objectives include implementing the Reintroduction and Genetic Management Plan and revise it as necessary, having these reintroduced rabbit subpopulations retain characteristics of Columbia Basin specific ancestry and be considered fit by veterinary staff. In hopes that this initial reintroduction is successful, a sufficient number and demographic composition of pygmy rabbits need to be retained in order to support partially controlled field-breeding. Thereafter, two specific recovery emphasis areas need to have a subpopulation with a 5-year average of 125 individuals, approximating the last known subpopulation in the Sagebrush Flat site. To ensure this objective is meet, estimators need to be updated as necessary. Later in the short term, more recovery emphasis areas will need to be established. The final short term objective is to make conservation agreements with landowners, managers, and other interested populations within the historical distribution of the Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit. The long term objective is to increase the size, number, distribution, and security of free-ranging subpopulations of the Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit.

Intelligent, playful, cute and cuddly. Aquatic, mammalian, fuzzy and furry. So furry, in fact, that more than a century ago the Southern Sea Otter nearly became extinct due to over-exploitation of their fur, known to be the thickest of all mammals. Since the early twentieth century, they've been protected by the International Fur Seal Treaty and made a remarkable recovery. But today they face new threats, beyond hunting, that are much, much worse than we realized.

At full size, males are about 65 lbs and 4 1/2 feet long, females about 45 lbs and 4 feet long. Females typically reach maturity at about 3 years, and males 5, but their first offspring likely won't survive. Approximately 75% of otters don't live past one year, contributing to a low population growth rate. When they want to eat, they have a large menu to choose from, including crabs, urchins, clams, abalones, mussels, and snails.

The Southern Sea Otter resides along the Central California coast, stretching from San Mateo County to Santa Barbara County. Before their decline, they covered the entire west coast of the North American continent. Between 1976 and 1984, the Southern Sea Otter population had dropped by 25%, consisting of only 1,300 individuals. While they initially recovered rapidly, nearly doubling the population within 10 years, they faced another decline by 1995 that lasted nearly 5 years, and thus were added to the Endangered Species Act in 1987 (revised in 2003) as a Threatened Species.

In addition to low population levels, a recovery plan was established for these critters due to a potential increase in environmental factors. These include oil spills, injury from fishing equipment, and pollution.

The most recent decrease in the Southern Sea Otter is contributed to several factors. Otters only breed one pup a year and have trouble increasing their population size, which grows less than 5% each year. Additionally, as their population began to increase during the mid 1980s to 1990s, they had denser populations which eventually led to a smaller food supply. There's also speculation over trapping equipment that could be drowning otters, but no research has been done to prove this. The largest threat to sea otters, however, is disease, contributing to nearly 40% of deaths. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Plan, "the growth rate of the California [sea otter] population would be substantially higher in the absence of disease."

To counteract these forces, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Foundation created a recovery plan. First on the agenda is to determine what is contributing to the pollution and disease and to measure these levels over a period of time. Once researchers pinpoint the factors, organizations like the California Department of Fish and Game, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Marine Sanctuaries can work to minimize them and monitor stress and disease levels in otters through tissue samples. With the help of aquariums and sanctuaries, the foundation aims to increase public involvement and awareness about the Southern Sea Otter through educational programs and expanded opportunities.

  • Unlike most marine mammals, otters have almost no fat or blubber. To keep warm, they trap air bubbles within their dense fur, which can grow to be as thick as 650,000 follicles per square inch (that's about 4x the amount of our entire head!)

  • In addition to their fur, otters keep warm by consuming nearly 25-30% of their body weight in food every day. A male otter may eat 25 lbs of food in one day.

  • Otters have a high metabolism - nearly 25x greater than most land animals - to digest this large intake of food.

  • While sea otters spend nearly all their time in the water, they hardly dive deeper than 20ft under water. They float on their backs on the surface for most of the day.

  • Within the last decade, nearly $1.75 million tax dollar contributions have gone towards the recovery of sea otters in California.

Can You Spot the Spots of the Mexican Spotted Owl? By: Sara Delany

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
            The Mexican Spotted Owl is one three subspecies of spotted owls. The Environmental Conservation Online System describes the birds as having brown and white spots on their grayish-brown abdomens, backs, and heads, giving them their name. The Defenders of Wildlife report that they’re usually about 16-19 inches tall with a wingspan ranging from 42-45 inches. Male are generally smaller than females and they can live to be about 16 to 17 years old. Interestingly, according to the Environmental Conservation Online System, they have dark eyes rather than light like most owls, which, according to Owling.com, makes them easy to identify.



HABITAT
            The Environmental Conservation Online System states that these birds tend to live in old-growth forests with very high tree densities, high canopies, and multi-storied levels that are primary spots for nesting. They are also known to inhabit communities with vertical-walled rocky cliffs that are good for protected nesting and roosting. They usually live in areas that have a water source nearby and at elevations of 4,100-9,000 feet.


DIET/ HUNTING
            According to the Defenders of Wildlife, the Mexican Spotted Owls are nocturnal hunters that prey on small mammals. These include wood rats, mice, voles, rabbits, gophers, bats, birds, reptiles, and arthropods like crickets and grasshoppers. They tend to find elevated perches to find prey.




THREATS

            As indicated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Plan, these creatures were listed as threatened in the Endangered Species Act on March 16, 1993 for the following reasons: habitat destruction/degradation, climate change, human activity, the predation of Grey Horned Owls, and encroachment of the Barred Owl. According to Our Endangered World, logging of old-growth forests is the main cause for habitat destruction. This is more of a problem in the United States than in Mexico because forestry in Mexico is not as damaging as forestry in the United States. This makes it likely that while the owl population in Mexico is lower, it is more stable than the population in the United States. The Defenders of Wildlife reports there being an estimated 2,106 individuals in the United States today.
The Defenders of Wildlife state that the climate in the regions these owls inhabit is becoming drier and hotter. This poses a threat because these organisms rely on rainfall to increase the amount of vegetation, which then increases the prey population. The lack of rain increases the risk of wild fires as well.

RANGE
            The Environmental Conservation Online System states that this particular subspecies has the largest range of all Spotted Owl subspecies and can be found in southern Utah and Colorado, mountain ranges in Arizona and New Mexico, parts of Western Texas, and even Northern and Central mountain ranges in Mexico.


RECOVERY PLAN
            According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the recovery plan for this organism consists of four major steps: management, monitoring, research, and implementation. The management aspect of this plan includes Protected Activity Centers (PACs) that include 600 acres of land that surround know owl nesting sites. These areas may be mechanically treated to lower the risk of wild fires. This may require an analysis of the PACs to see which require the treatment. 10- 20% of the owls’ nesting/roosting habitats will also be managed in order to help the recovery of the owl.
            It will be important to monitor the owl populations in these habitats to see if the population is stable and/or growing. The habitats will also be monitored in order to determine if management of those lands is still required.
            Things like the owls’ relationship to their habitats, their biological interactions, and population and ecosystem structures will need to be researched in order to increase their understanding of the Mexican Spotted Owl so there can eventually be more recovery plan implementations in later years.

            The implementation of this plan is estimated to cost a minimum of about $42,628,000. The owl populations are expected to recover in 2022 if implementations of each part of this recovery plan are successful.

Description and Ecology of Organism
-Description: Rodent with grooved upper front teeth, and cinnamon to red colored fur. There are two subspecies, a Northern variety and a Southern variety.
-An adult's length is twelve to eighteen centimeters (5 to 7 inches) and a tail length of six to ten centimeters (2 to 4 inches)
-Weight of a mature mouse is approximately 10 to 20 grams (0.35 to 0.7 ounces)
-Nocturnal
-Makes tunnels and enjoys living in glasswort plant 
-Predators: hawk, snake and owl species, as well as shorebirds and larger mammals
      -Domestic cats have been becoming a threat due to increased developed land
-Competent swimmer
-Can tolerate salt in its food and water supply
-Drinks salt water and sometimes even prefers it to fresh water!
      -Eats seeds and plants
 -Lives 8-12 months
      -Only has about 4 offspring per litter and only about once a year
